Fort Glanville was constructed in 1880 as part of South Australia's coastal defence network. Alongside Fort Largs and the Port Adelaide Torpedo Station, it was built during a period of concern about possible naval threats.
The fort was designed to defend the approaches to Port Adelaide and remains one of the best preserved examples of 19th-century coastal fortifications in South Australia.
